Democrats Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Content That Sparked the Debate
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who previously served in defense or security positions.
"Like us, you all made an pledge to defend and support this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from overseas, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you must decline illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that break the statutes or our constitution."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a heated response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership published a unified statement censuring the comments.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our nation with great loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to make certain the safety of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical digital publications and withdraw his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the announcement added.
Representatives' Strong Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also published a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who care for this nation and swore an pledge to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their vow to the founding principles and duty to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "Every American must unite and denounce the ex-president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Additional Partisan Reactions
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the execution of government members."
He stated: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of the government advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and decide all that."
Administration Reaction
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the spokesperson said. "There are active officials of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
