Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
