Russian President Vladimir Putin Pledges Continuous Crude Oil Shipments to India in Snub of American Demands

In a unambiguous signal to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to maintain “unbroken” supplies of energy resources to India. The announcement came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and asserted their partnership were “resistant to external pressure.”

A Signal Aimed at the West

The statement, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a pointed rebuke at the United States and its allies, who have tried to urge New Delhi into reducing its close relations with Moscow. The backdrop is in response to recent Washington's moves, notably additional trade penalties on India because of its buying of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a reliable exporter of oil and gas and everything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” he said. “Russia is prepared to keep guaranteeing the steady delivery of energy for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not mentioning oil directly, supported the sentiment by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a key and crucial pillar of the Indo-Russian partnership.”

Challenging US Interference

Prior to the meeting, via a television interview, Putin had criticized Washington's stance regarding India's energy purchases. He argued, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India enjoy the equivalent access?”

The visit marked his first trip to India since the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a visible effort to display that the bond between the men remained intact.

A Personal Greeting

Taking an notable step, Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. Both leaders shared a warm hug like longtime companions before having a private dinner together.

The Indian prime minister in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “founded on shared respect and strong faith.”

Reaffirming Strategic Partnerships

The bilateral summit yielded several key agreements in the fields of military and economic cooperation. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an strategic roadmap that runs to 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to one hundred billion dollars annually by the 2030 deadline.

The leaders also pledged to restructure their defence ties. While Russia remains India's primary source of weapons, this role has declined lately as India works to widen its procurement.

The joint statement emphasized cooperation in the co-development of cutting-edge defence platforms, although explicit details of systems like the Sukhoi Su-57 were left out.

Ultimately, Moscow and Delhi restated that amid the “current complex, strained, and uncertain geopolitical situation, their relationship stay resilient to external pressure.”
